I went to Derby today & I must say that I was rather disappointed. Usually when you arrive at 10am on a Sunday you're queuing with loads of other eager people, but today I was able to walk right in. I personally thought the numbers were way down on last year, but on the plus side you could easily walk around & actually see what was going on. There were a fair few demonstration games that didn't turn up either. Also rather disappointingly even after consuming a couple of cans of alcohol I still only found some paint to buy! If any of you went on Saturday I'd be interested to hear what the show was like.

I to went to derby yesterday and for me even alcohol did not save it from it's mediocraty, not even any cider! On a serious note, the show really was almost dead on Sunday, with a lot of games missing. I was also dissapointed not to see one of Daves participation games at the show. We may have had posters at the show, but without a specific participation game for people to come and talk to us about the club, the impact created will have been minimal. I think it is important that we maintain some kind of game at as many shows as possible, as this will do more for the club than any amount of posters will!

I too was surprised to see no club participation at this years Derby event, the first time since the shows began I think. As for the posters advertising the "open day", from the amount that were just lying about it's a good job the day will be free, cause I can't see very many turning up. The club didn't just need a display at Derby, it SHOULD have had one.

I was at Derby on the Saturday from about 11am and left at 3pm. There were a reasonable number of people about but nothing like previous years at the Assembly Rooms. No bargains on the bring & buy (blame eBay and traders operating the B & B); decently priced food and drink; shrinking trade presence; empty tables/missing demo games; just very lacklustre. Derby seems to be another show that's lost it's 'soul' since moving, to ostensibly a better venue (Alumwell?). Looks like you have to go farther North or South to find successful shows (Partizan, Warfayre, etc ... ). On-line trading has obviously had its effect in recent years on the attendance at all the shows, but something deeper would seem to be at the heart of this malaise. Shows need to re-invent themselves with a particular purpose in mind, competition, trade, conference, etc ... and present an experience for the visitor to enjoy by adding value to their visit. It will no longer be enough to hire a hall, ring up a few mediocre traders, place a advert in the magazines and expect wargamers to flock to the doors in order to pay to be allowed to shop!
I would be interested in hearing the 'reasons' why some people feel we should have a demo/participation game at Derby. I can see that a presence at more local one-day shows (Alumwell & Bifrost - with Wargamer/Great Barr to come, where we have been/will be present) would possibly attract new members from the surrounding area and show support for our neigbouring clubs that have been kind enough to support us in the past, but other than for the prestige of being at Salute, Triples, Derby what other benefits do they confer? Are they worth the effort in time and money?

Why go to Derby? It's the flaming World Championships and if we do not go there why bother with all our local shows? You are not likely to get anyone from Sutton Coldfield thinking they could do with a drive over to Amblecote on a Friday night for a good 15mm scrap. Besides which most local shows are even more pants than the worse Derby show. Alumwell are just a bunch of money orientated profiteers. Over the years they have treated our support for their show disgracefully.
We have been going for over 25 years to the best of my knowledge and have won respect and prizes in the serious categories (Keith, John Lavender, Phill etc) and more often than not infamy and best game trophy for our participation games. We even have a small hard core fan club that turn up and look for our game, often spending time to reminisce about past games and comparing the new to the old.
Why are the shows on the decline? Probably lack of support!! Too many people just turn up and whiz through like they are in a supermarket, fill up their bags, spend out and go. Too bad for the people that prepare demonstration and participation games, they are not selling anything.
However, as a club we have had quite a lot of positive publicity from our attendance at Derby. We have been interviewed by local newspapers and radio stations, had photos taken for various publications and even had the rules for our Sergeant Anthony Clarke Booth VC game published in a war game mag.
There was a time when the prize money funded the game and the travel expenses, but inflation has sadly meant that it barely covers petrol money now, but in addition it has been our tradition to use a participation game as a Trojan horse. Once inside with our free passes, one of us goes out 'to get the rest of the figures' and returns with three other club members on the spare tickets. Stretching the value added contribution of attending.
We are always welcomed at Derby and we see new ideas and old friends there. I personally take time out to check out the opposition and pinch ideas for improving my gaming and presentation of our club games. If we knock Derby on the head we will be inducing our own system of isolationism and rather than promoting the spread of war gaming be reducing it to a localised community level of stagnation.

I spent most of the Sunday at the Derby event with Scott, Soupdragon2 and Tom and was very disappointed to see no one repesenting our club. The reason I would have liked to have seen a club demo or participation game on at Derby is simply to be represented at such an event, cost and time should not come into it, there were obviously several members who travelled up there anyway. and our absence was commented on by several traders and visitors, they also asked why there was to be no Warfayre show. Surely the taking part in any such an event is not only to try and attract "members" but to promote wargaming as a hobby in general, regardless of the distance.

Apart from Warfayre I haven't been to a show(*) for 5 or so years because I think they have turned into shopping trips where a few gamers take static displays and some others just use as a chance to have an all day game for themselves where they can do a bit of shopping
Spoken to Mad Dog a couple of times over the years that shows need two things. 1 Decent particpation games and 1 people who are prepared to play them.
1 thing our club has had a national level apart from some strong competitive performances (& I don't mean my third place in the Student Nationals 1989 (Renaissance)) is that we have a recognition for good quality and diferent participation games.
Mad Dog in particular has taken forward this already decent reputation in the last ten years or so and this has been good for club (if hard to quantify)
If people want to put on a game I'm sure the club can provide the financial support (kit, petrol etc)and some members are bound to want to help- but is anybody interested in doing it? If as a club we don't do Derby, Triples etc it is a shame so hopefully we will have more some highlights.
My highlights: Hereward: The game that got me into Wargaming at Aston (Blame Keith) Stalag Luft: memorably for two reasons, 1 I had to get at 4 am to run it with JD down in SELWG show in Lewisham & 2 as GM/Commandant I could just tell pople who I didn't like (Cockney's, scousers, taffs, jocks etc) that whilst it was a good plan they had been found and shot. 617: The drama and tension of the planes coming down those Fjords: The Sheep game: Can't even remember the game it's just the sheep were hard. They were. Honest. Monty Python: Explaining to a serving pilot that whilst the AEROplane wasn't aerodynamic that was hardly the point, and no he couldn't play as Snoopy until the 8 year old had finished.
* I don't include the doubles competition I entered with Keith & Phil (don't ask) and in fact don't ask about how I had to break into a pub, either.

We should put on a game of some description at Derby if for no other reason than to support the hobby. Having a presence at Derby also keeps us in touch with traders that we could have support our own shows/open days, which is of obvious benefit. If Derby is beginning to die like some other shows it is because of people like us who are not supporting the world championships due to their being no obvious benefit to ourselves. Having a presence at Derby also keeps us in touch with traders But I ask you, if a show as huge as Derby dies then how many others will follow? And with no shows how will new blood ever be bought into the hobby? With no shows or support the hobby would degenerate into whatever you can buy from Games Workshop as it would be the only place new players would have to go. And none of us would wish that on the poor buggers, would we?!
